Guide to Ballroom Dancing Styles for Beginners: International Styles

In our first blog post on the American ballroom styles, we noted that there are 4 styles of ballroom competitive dances.  Here we will discuss the two 'International styles': standard and latin.  These styles, consisting of 5 dances each, are considered the most competitive and are the primary focus of ballroom competitions all over the world.

Many advanced dancers choose to specialize in one or the other of these styles, allowing them to become experts in the techniques necessary to elevate them to the competitive level necessary to succeed in these competitions.  Some dancers choose to specialize in both however.  There is a separate competitive category called the '10 dance' for those who choose this latter route, though some can do well in categories that are limited to one style or the other.
